4 reasons why a baby’s head needs more protection.
Which is why that month of constant bonks feels so scary.
In the first two years, the head is heavier for the body, the skull bones are softer and still joining, and balance is brand new. That's why backward tumbles feel so scary, and why a cushion in the right place makes sense.
Toddlerhead ≈ 1/4 of heightAdulthead ≈ 1/7 of heightA newborn's head is about a quarter of their body length. An adult's is about a seventh. Top-heavy bodies tip, and the head lands first.
The Bump; RI Dept. of HealthInfant skull bone has been measured as roughly 12 times less stiff than adult skull bone. It flexes more on impact.
Coats & Margulies, J. Neurotrauma, 2006The soft spot on top of the head (anterior fontanelle) closes between about 7 and 18 months, right through the wobbly stage.
Children's Hospital ColoradoUS emergency visits a year for fall injuries in children under five. Falls are the top cause of non-fatal injury in kids.
RI Dept. of HealthMost everyday bumps are minor, and falling is a normal part of learning to walk. SoftFall is there to soften the backward ones. If your baby hits their head and vomits, seems unusually sleepy or irritable, or isn't acting like themselves, call your doctor or get medical help right away.
How the first month usually goes.
Day 1“Here we go…”
Every step is a wobble and every wobble ends in a sit or a tip back. Straps on, and let them try.
Week 1Peace of mind, finally
They still tumble, but now the cushion takes the bump on tile and hardwood. You can step into the kitchen without your heart racing.
Weeks 2–3They stop being scared of falling
Without the fear of a hard bump, they’re braver: more standing, more cruising, more getting back up.
Week 4+You forget to hover
Soft, light and comfy, so they don’t fuss or try to take it off. Their balance is steadier now, and you’re both more relaxed.
“Don't babies need to learn how to fall?”
Yes. And they still will. SoftFall doesn't stop a single fall. It just means that when they tip straight backward, the back of their head lands on a cushion instead of tile.
Tap a number360° ring cushion
A full ring of padding wraps the back of the head, so whether they tip straight back or back at an angle, the cushion meets the floor before the head does.
Hollow centre
A baby's skull is soft, and they spend a lot of time on their backs. The open middle cradles the round back of the head, so it rests in the opening instead of pressing on one spot when they lie back during play.
For awake play only. Not designed to prevent or treat flat head; ask your pediatrician about any flat spot. Source
Cloud-soft, puffy fill
Plump, fluffy filling that squishes gently when they land, then puffs right back up after every bump and every wash. Soft enough to rest on, bouncy enough to cushion.
Fall-alert squeaker
Sewn into the Cloud Butterfly's padding. When they land on it, it squeaks, so you know a tumble happened even from the next room.
Adjustable shoulder & chest straps
Soft plush straps keep the ring right behind the head through sitting, crawling, cruising and climbing, and loosen as they grow.
Hear every tumble, even when you can't see it.
Behind the sofa, round the corner, while you're stirring dinner. A soft squeak tells you they've landed, so you can check in without staring at them all day.
Braver babies. Calmer parents.
You stop hovering
Step back, cook dinner, answer the door. The back of their head has a cushion even when you're a few steps away.
They try again instead of giving up
A soft landing means fewer tears and a faster "try again". Confidence comes from more attempts, not fewer.
You hear every tumble
The Cloud Butterfly squeaks on impact, so a fall behind the sofa doesn't go unnoticed.
They think it's a toy
A butterfly or koala on their back, not safety gear. Babies accept it, and you get the photos.
Feather light
About 90 g of soft plush and springy filling. It won't pull them backward or slow them down.
Snug in winter
The plush back panel adds a cozy layer over their back on cold floors and drafty mornings.

Every parent knows that sound.
Then the second of silence before the cry. You know the one.
They pull up on the sofa, let go, and tip straight back. On tile, hardwood or laminate, the back of the head takes the hit, usually just as you turn away. Some babies do it three times before lunch.
You can't be within arm's reach every second of the day. And you shouldn't have to hold your breath every time they try.
"I find this terrifying and hover behind her, waiting to catch her and break her fall."Parent on Mumsnet
"We watch him like hawks but even when he's inches away from us he still falls over."Parent on Mumsnet
"Every so often he drops backward and hits his head on the floor."Parent on Mouths of Mums
"I feel so bad but he is learning and I can't wrap him in cotton wool."Parent on Mumsnet
The things parents ask before they buy.
Will my baby actually wear it?
Most do. It looks like a soft toy, not safety gear, weighs about 90 g and sits flat on the back, so it doesn't pull them backward. Most babies stop noticing it within a few days. Start with short play sessions. If it still isn't right, you have 90 days to send it back.
Could it be a choking hazard?
We designed out the small parts.
- Dots and faces are embroidered, with no buttons, beads or plastic eyes
- Antennae and wings are stitched to the body
- The squeaker is sewn inside the padding
- Check seams before each use and stop using it if any stitching comes loose
- Never use it for sleep, and keep straps adjusted so nothing reaches the neck
What age is SoftFall for?
From when babies start sitting up on their own (often around 5 to 6 months) through crawling, pulling up and early walking, usually up to about 2 years. The straps adjust as they grow.
Does it protect against forward or sideways falls?
The 360° ring wraps the back of the head, so it helps with straight-back and angled-back falls. It won't cushion a fall forward onto the face. That's why every order includes free knee pads and grip socks, which help on slippery floors during crawling and cruising.
Does it help when they pull up to stand?
That's the moment it's made for. Little hands slip off the sofa or coffee table, babies drop back on their bottom, then tip onto the back of the head. The ring cushion sits right there. For bumps on table edges when they stand up underneath, pair SoftFall with corner guards.
Which design has the fall-alert squeaker?
Only the Cloud Butterfly. The Pink Butterfly, Grey Koala and Green Tortoise give the same cushioning without the sound.
Why is there a hole in the cushion?
The open centre cradles the round back of the head so it rests in the opening rather than pressing on one spot when your baby lies back during play. It also keeps the ring flat and steady. SoftFall is for awake, supervised play only. It is not a sleep pillow and is not designed to treat or prevent flat head syndrome; if you notice a flat spot, ask your pediatrician.
Will it make my baby too warm in summer?
The plush is soft and breathable. On hot days, use it during active play rather than all day, and remove it if their back feels sweaty.
Can my baby sleep, ride in a car seat or sit in a high chair with it on?
No. Take SoftFall off for sleep, car seats, strollers, high chairs and baths. It's for awake, supervised play only.
How do I wash it?
Machine wash on a gentle cycle in a laundry bag, or hand wash in cool water. Air dry completely before use.
How fast is shipping?
Orders ship within 48 hours with free tracked shipping. Delivery usually takes 7–12 business days to the US and 8–15 to Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. You'll get a tracking link by email.
Why buy more than one?
One for home and one for grandma's or daycare, a spare while one is in the wash, twins or siblings, or a baby-shower gift. The 4-pack brings it down to $-16.49 each.
What if it doesn't work for us?
You have 90 days from delivery. Email support@hyggles.com and send it back clean and complete, even if it's been used, and we'll refund you. See the refund policy.
Important safety information
SoftFall is designed to help cushion backward falls. It does not prevent falls and cannot prevent every injury. It is not a medical device or a substitute for adult supervision.
- Always keep your baby within sight while they wear it.
- For awake, supervised play only. Remove for sleep, naps, car seats, strollers, high chairs and baths.
- Adjust straps so it fits snugly and sits behind the head, with no straps near the neck.
- Inspect seams and straps before each use. Stop using it if it is damaged.
- After any head bump, watch your baby closely. Seek medical help if they vomit, are unusually sleepy or irritable, or are not acting like themselves.
They'll fall. Make it soft.
